Seattle city tour or hop-on hop-off bus?

The hop-on hop-off bus is cheaper and lets you stop where you like, but its reviews are mixed and its route stays close to downtown. A guided city tour costs more and reaches Kerry Park, Fremont and the Ballard Locks.

Both options are bus tours of Seattle, but they work very differently. The City Sightseeing hop-on hop-off bus runs a 20-stop loop with recorded commentary, and your ticket lasts 24 or 48 hours. A guided city tour is a half day with a local guide who narrates live and decides the order on the day.

Below, the two side by side, what the hop-on hop-off reviews say, and two cheaper alternatives: a walking tour and a harbor cruise.

The quick answer

Choose a guided city tour for live commentary and the sights beyond downtown: Kerry Park, Fremont and the Ballard Locks. Choose the hop-on hop-off bus ($65) only if you want transport between downtown sights over a day or two and can live with waits: it is rated 2.5 from 84 reviews, and Viator sells it only until 11 October 2026.

How do the guided tour and the hop-on hop-off bus compare?

The guided tours are narrated half days that reach the neighborhoods; the hop-on hop-off bus is a self-guided loop around downtown and Seattle Center.

What do the hop-on hop-off reviews say?

They are mixed and lean negative: the bus is rated 2.5 from 84 reviews, with 39 one-star and 25 four or five-star reviews.

The complaints repeat. Guests report long waits at stops, in some cases 45 minutes to an hour and a half, and some counted only one to three buses on the route. Several say the recorded narration was out of sync with where the bus was, or skipped, and that stops were not announced. On the positive side, guests mention friendly drivers, an easy way on and off, and a good overview of the city.

When does the hop-on hop-off bus run?

On the 2026 schedule, from 24 April to 11 October, every 20 to 30 minutes from 10 AM until 4 or 5 PM depending on the date.

The busier timetable (every 20 minutes until 5 PM) runs on 23 and 24 May and from 28 June to 6 September; the rest of the season is every 30 minutes until 4 PM. Stop 1 is at 398 Broad Street by the Space Needle, and you can start at any stop. After 11 October the Viator listing has no departures; one reseller lists an hourly winter service from 10 AM to 3 PM, so check the timetable for your date before you count on it.

What does a guided tour give you that the bus does not?

A live guide, and the places beyond the bus route: the Kerry Park viewpoint, Fremont and the Ballard Locks.

None of the bus's 20 listed stops is at Kerry Park, in Fremont or at the Locks. On the flagship, guests often name their guides and the stories and humour along the way. The trade-off is time and price: the flagship is $111 per person for about 4 hours, and it confirms within 48 hours rather than at booking.

When is the hop-on hop-off bus the better choice?

When you want to spend most of the day inside Seattle Center or at Pike Place Market and use the bus as transport between them.

One guest wrote that they got off for Chihuly and the Museum of Pop Culture, then for lunch on the waterfront, and rode the rest of the loop. Another advised an early start to fit in the stops. If that sounds like you, the hop-on hop-off bus is $65 per person; entry to attractions, food and tips are not included.

Is a walking tour a better alternative?

For downtown and Pioneer Square, yes: the guided walks cost less than either bus and you see more up close.

The Welcome to Seattle walk ($49 per person) covers about 2.5 miles in 2.5 hours from the Pioneer Building and includes a monorail ride. The Beneath the Streets walk ($32 per person) spends an hour in and under Pioneer Square, with three flights of stairs.

What about a harbor cruise?

For the skyline from the water in an hour, yes: the Elliott Bay cruise leaves Pier 55 and is narrated on board.

It is $46 per person, listed as wheelchair accessible, and Mount Rainier shows on clear days. Check in 30 minutes before. It pairs well with a morning city tour, since it covers the waterfront that the buses only pass.
